Course overview

To enable delegates to acquire a systematic knowledge of the multifarious nature of accidents and accident statistics and the practical applications of educating drivers by considering the road and traffic factors that influence crash risk and how these factors can be managed to reduce overall level of risk in driving.

 
Location

Cranfield University is located at the very heart of the UK – within the innovation triangle between London and the cities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Our central location provides easy access from the M1, excellent main line rail service as well as proximity to key international airports. Set in rolling countryside, Cranfield offers a rich, rural landscape complemented by thriving towns and picturesque villages.

  • Road: We are just 10 minutes from Junctions 13 & 14 of the M1 motorway. There is free parking on campus. 
  • Rail: Milton Keynes or Bedford 
  • Air: London Luton (22 miles), Heathrow (50 miles) or Birmingham (70 miles).

Course description

Course objectives 

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Conceptualise driving safety in various ways, and understand how this is related to different measurements of accidents and behaviour
  • Understand the interplay of accident proneness, exposure and culpability, and evaluate individual differences traffic safety research and data as to its validity and meaning.

Topics

The course content relates to engineering and educational practices in influencing driver behaviour. Topics covered include:

  • Basic statistical methods for individual differences in road safety
  • Individual differences in road safety
  • Categorisation of accidents
  • Culpability for accidents
  • Accident proneness as an individual characteristic
  • The meaning and measurement of exposure to risk and its association with accidents
  • How to conceptualise and measure individual differences in driver safety.
