In order to fulfil this objective, the course will cover the following areas:

  • Context and Background of Renewable Energy Projects
  • Renewable Energy Technologies
  • Renewable Energy Economics
  • Energy Law and Policy
  • Risk, Certification and Insurance.

Context and Background of Renewable Energy Projects

  • World energy consumption.
  • Global energy markets. European and World Trends.
  • Evolution of RE, Energy and Emissions Trade, Opportunities, Threats, Emerging Markets.
  • Emissions’ medium and long term targets
  • Lessons learnt from management of RE projects.
  • Economic Recession and RE.
  • Debate on environmental sustainability.

Renewable Energy Technologies

  • Evolution of RE Technologies.
  • Classification (onshore-offshore/marine).
  • Comparison of fossil fuel and RE energy sources (economics, applications).
  • Wind Power (offshore-onshore, domestic-large scale).
  • Solar Power (solar radiation, solar thermal-collector elements, concentrated solar power (CSP) photovoltaics).
  • Hydroelectric (classification, water turbines, small scale hydroelectricity).
  • Geothermal (technology, installed capacity).
  • Emerging Technologies.
  • World and European Energy Map workshop (total installed capacity per region and technology).

Renewable Energy Economics

  • Government support for renewable energy.
  • Electricity market reform.
  • LCOE and project economics.
  • Project risks.
  • Funding requirements and sources.
  • Detailed project models and costs.

Energy Law and Policy

  • Onshore installations: EU and UK legislation (Energy Act 2004, 2008, 2010).
  • Offshore installations: Offshore Installations under the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, Territorial Sea Convention, custom).
  • Exercise of prescriptive and enforcement jurisdiction.
  • Installations in the territorial sea.
  • Installations in the Exclusive Economic Zone.
  • Removal and Decommissioning of Offshore Installations.
  • Protection of the Marine Environment.

Certification and Insurance
