Course overview

The Symposium is designed to provide:

  • A rare opportunity in which to raise and discuss in depth topical issues with Europe’s leading aviation lawyers and experts in air transport regulatory policy
  • An in depth review of the international civil air transport regulatory framework
  • Detailed information about key air transport legislation and its substantial impact on the aviation industry
  • A guide to recent regulatory developments in air transport (e.g on competition and environmental issues such as the European Emissions Trading Scheme)
  • Disaster Forum on accident investigation, airline response and insurance
  • Passenger claims and the implications for airlines.

Cranfield University is located at the very heart of the UK – within the innovation triangle between London and the cities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Our central location provides easy access from the M1, excellent main line rail service as well as proximity to key international airports. Set in rolling countryside, Cranfield offers a rich, rural landscape complemented by thriving towns and picturesque villages.

  • Road: We are just 10 minutes from Junctions 13 & 14 of the M1 motorway. There is free parking on campus. 
  • Rail: Milton Keynes or Bedford 
  • Air: London Luton (22 miles), Heathrow (50 miles) or Birmingham (70 miles).

Accommodation is on a full-board basis from the evening before the course commences until the afternoon of the last day. The course fee includes refreshments and lunch during the day. Course description

Who should attend?

The symposium is intended for those working in the air transport industry who wish to both update and broaden their knowledge of air law and regulation. It will also provide an opportunity to acquire a general grounding in these subjects, as it has become a must have to anyone working in aviation to have a broad understanding of the current regulation, including its commercial impact.

Individuals working for the following organisations should find the course of benefit: airlines, airport authorities, aircraft manufacturers, financial and legal establishments, government departments and regulatory authorities.

Course Directors

Carole Blackshaw is a solicitor and consultant specialising in aviation. Her book ‘Aviation Law and Regulation’ was published in 1992. She has been a visiting lecturer at Cranfield since 1987 and regularly lectures on international courses for the airline industry. She is also a consultant with the aviation law firm Gates and Partners.
