Course overview
To introduce delegates to theories of individual differences in driver behaviour and enable them to apply this knowledge to the understanding of drivers who offend, re-offend and the rehabilitation of drivers.
Location
Cranfield University is located at the very heart of the UK – within the innovation triangle between London and the cities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Our central location provides easy access from the M1, excellent main line rail service as well as proximity to key international airports. Set in rolling countryside, Cranfield offers a rich, rural landscape complemented by thriving towns and picturesque villages.
- Road: We are just 10 minutes from Junctions 13 & 14 of the M1 motorway. There is free parking on campus.
- Rail: Milton Keynes or Bedford
- Air: London Luton (22 miles), Heathrow (50 miles) or Birmingham (70 miles).

Accommodation is on a full-board basis from the evening before the course commences until the afternoon of the last day. The course fee includes a course dinner for all participants and refreshments and lunch during the day. The accommodation fee includes all other meals. Course description
Course objectives
On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
- Compare and contrast concepts of individual differences and explain how these may explain driver characteristics and behaviours, including traffic offenders
- Describe and justify how individual differences may affect drivers’ educational needs and the role of instructors / educators
- Demonstrate practical application of individual difference assessment tools in the context of driver behaviour / education
- Classify technologies and techniques for assessment of different aspects of individual differences in driver behaviour and prediction of driver risk

- Why do people behave the way they do?
- The role of the media, car culture and sociological factors
- Trait and type theories of personality
- State and trait theories of emotion
- Driver personality research (e.g. sensation seeking, anger and aggression)
- Relationship between individual differences, risk taking, driver behaviour and crashes
- Distinguishing between attitudes, motivation, beliefs and behavioural intention
- Attitude development and measurement
- Driver beliefs including illusory bias of control and over-estimation of skill
- Theory of reasoned actions and errors, lapses and violations
- Individual differences and traffic offenders including recidivism and rehabilitation
