Fundamentals of Flow Assurance

Course overview
A one-week introductory course covering all aspects of flow assurance for the oil and gas industry, but with relevance to all industries with fluid flow related issues. The course will consist of lectures supported by videos, worked examples, case studies as well as design software demonstrations and practical laboratory sessions.

Cranfield University is located at the very heart of the UK – within the innovation triangle between London and the cities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Our central location provides easy access from the M1, excellent main line rail service as well as proximity to key international airports. Set in rolling countryside, Cranfield offers a rich, rural landscape complemented by thriving towns and picturesque villages.
- Road: We are just 10 minutes from Junctions 13 & 14 of the M1 motorway. There is free parking on campus.

Course description
Who should attend?
The course will be of particular interest to engineers in oil and gas exploration, production and operating companies, consultants, contractors, service providers and equipment suppliers involve in design and operation. Researchers who need to understand the background and application of their research. Managers who wants to understand the technical issues to aid decision making.
Course objectives
On successful completion of the module the delegate will be able to:
- Carry out a systematic hydraulic analysis of oil/gas and gas/condensate transportation systems.
- Design for successful flow assurance and operability.
Course content
- Multiphase flow hydraulics: Steady state flow regimes, pressure and temperature prediction. Network and nodal analysis. Physical properties. Oil and gas pipeline design. Transient flows. Pipeline operations and pigging. Thermal management. Separation and boosting systems. Multiphase flow metering.
- Production chemistry: Fluid sampling and PVT analysis. Deposition and management of hydrates, wax & rheology, scale, asphaltines and naphthanates.
- Case studies: Demonstration of PIPESIM steady state and OLGA transient multiphase flow design software. Laboratory demonstrations.
