Course overview
A detailed three day course consisting of:
- A comprehensive and detailed overview of advanced combustion engines (HCCI, GDI, H2)
- An understanding of alternative fuel supply and on-vehicle handling issues (biofuels, hydrogen, methanol, ethanol)
- An awareness of the latest mechanical design trends including the use of advanced materials and low friction designs
- An overview of pollution control technologies that are available to meet future emissions/CO2 legislation
- Demonstrations of both engine combustion research laboratory activity and engine system simulation techniques.

Cranfield University is located at the very heart of the UK – within the innovation triangle between London and the cities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Our central location provides easy access from the M1, excellent main line rail service as well as proximity to key international airports. Set in rolling countryside, Cranfield offers a rich, rural landscape complemented by thriving towns and picturesque villages.
- Road: We are just 10 minutes from Junctions 13 & 14 of the M1 motorway. There is free parking on campus.

- Air: London Luton (22 miles), Heathrow (50 miles) or Birmingham (70 miles).

Course description
This course is part of a programme of 3 short courses in Advanced Powertrain Systems. These courses provide an opportunity for management and technologists to rapidly become aware of the engineering and marketing issues that surround the development and introduction of the new generation of automotive engines and driveline systems. The courses are structured to either provide an introductory overview (ideal for those who need an awareness of the subject) or an in-depth knowledge of the main systems and components. Through the support of its industrial partners plus leading academics working in the field Cranfield is able offer a unique opportunity to learn and experience modern powertrain technology as it prepares itself for the environmental and economic challenges ahead.

Who should attend?
The primary target audience for the courses are technologists and managers working in the automotive and related industries who are needing to update themselves in the details of advanced powertrain technologies.
A secondary demand for the courses (particularly the introductory course) is thought to exist within public sector bodies (eg. RDAs, City Councils etc) and environmental groups who are seeking to be more aware about the issues surrounding the future of automotive powertrain technology.
The UK is considered as the best geographic area for both markets, although the EU and other regions would need to be considered once the programme has established itself.
