Introduction to Rotor Dynamics

Review of rotor dynamic principles, application of simple hand techniques to predict critical speeds of rotors taking cognisance of the influence of the rotor support; understanding of the dynamic response of rotors; stability; torsional vibrations; balancing of rotating machinery (complex numbers and graphical method); transfer function analysis; journal bearing design principles; stiffness and damping coefficients of hydrodynamic bearings.

Upon completion, the delegate should be capable of mathematically model the rotor dynamics of a range of machines including compressors, gas and steam turbines, pumps, fans etc.
Delegates are able to participate in the Masters level assessment of the course and may accumulate credits towards a Masters degree.
Who should attend?
This course is one of the modules on the Masters course ‘Design of Rotating Machines’ and is principally targeted at Masters degree students. However, the course is suitable for engineers who wish to get involved with rotor dynamics. Lectures are supported with tutorials and laboratory practical sessions.
