Course overview

Cranfield University works closely with the emergency services, central and local government, road safety charities and the commercial sector to seek ways to improve all aspects of driver behaviour and education. A growing problem for these professional groups is the effect of drink and drug use on driving performance.

This 5 day short course covering all the key aspects of drink and drug driving based on research evidence and real-world practical application of detection and impairment techniques. The course is delivered by UK experts in the field including Dr Paul Jackson who was responsible for the research underpinning the North review of Drink and Drug Driving Law.

 
Location

Cranfield University is located at the very heart of the UK – within the innovation triangle between London and the cities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Our central location provides easy access from the M1, excellent main line rail service as well as proximity to key international airports. Set in rolling countryside, Cranfield offers a rich, rural landscape complemented by thriving towns and picturesque villages.

Course description

The aim of the course is to enable students to critically evaluate the effect of alcohol and drugs on driving performance and road safety; thereby to inform driver education methods and improve enforcement. Upon completion of the course, delegates will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Explain and appraise the historical development and current situation regarding drink/ drug driving policy and the social response.
  • Identify and compare the effect of alcohol and the consumption of different quantities and types of dugs on driving performance.

Skills and other attributes

  • Present a balanced critique of drink and/or drug driving law enforcement and policy in terms of effects on behaviour.
  • Construct an effective educational approach to address the problem of drink / drug driving.

Course content

  • History and Background in drink and drug driving
  • Drink and drug drive law enforcement
  • Alcohol metabolism and alcohol impairment
  • Physiological effects of illicit and medicinal drug groups
  • Importance of tolerance / dependence
  • Roadside detecting
  • Drink drug driving and offender characteristics
  • Relationship between serious crime and traffic offences
  • Rehabilitation of offenders and recidivism

The course is designed to cater for those professionals who require a broad knowledge of drink and drug driving and the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving performance. It is also specifically aimed at those whose interest is in detecting at the roadside those drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The course will be of particular interest to those in the emergency services, fleet service managers, driver trainers and those involved in driver education or rehabilitation. It should also be of interest to transport managers, policy makers and those who wish to pursue a career in road safety.
