Short course/CPD

Safety Assessment of Aircraft Systems

Course date: 21 Jun 2010  - 25 Jun 2010

Course overview

The course describes and explains the various approaches to assessing the safety of increasingly complex aircraft systems. Emphasis is therefore placed on practical applications and design problems, with time allowed for discussion, several tutorials and a Course Exercise. The overall objectives are to:

  • Provide course delegates with knowledge of the methods for safety assessment in relation to the design, reliability, safety and certification of aircraft systems
  • Provide an open forum in which all issues related to safety assessment can be discussed.

Course description

Who should attend

The course is designed for experienced personnel from all parts of the aviation industry. It will be of particular value to those working for manufacturers, suppliers, operators and civil aviation authorities who are concerned with the design, reliability, safety or certification of aircraft systems.

Although there are no formal qualifications for entry, course numbers are limited and preference will be given to applicants best able to benefit fully from the course.

Course objectives

On completion of the course the Course, delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the regulatory background behind the Safety Assessment of Aircraft Systems
  • choose and apply the technique(s) which is most appropriate for the system under consideration
  • understand the theory behind each technique, including the strengths and weaknesses of each one, and be aware of possible pitfalls
  • appreciate the role of safety assessment in the overall context of aircraft certification
  • understand the issues to be faced for the certification of new systems and aircraft.

Content summary

Regulatory requirements

  • Requirements for safety assessment as part of Regulatory Approval and Continued Airworthiness process. This discusses the underlying principles applied by Regulatory authorities.
  • The development of requirements for safety assessment, FAR and EASA CS25-1309. This provides more information on the derivation of the quantitative safety targets, and how they may be achieved.

Methods and techniques

  • Introduction to the more common safety analysis techniques. This will include Dependence Diagrams, Failure Mode & Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Zonal Safety Assessment.
  • Common mode failures, traps and pitfalls of using safety assessment. This describes the importance of considering failures that may occur due to a ‘common cause’. The importance of correctly applying safety assessment techniques is also explained.
  • Examples of mechanical systems and power plants. This includes Particular Risk Assessment using uncontained engine rotor failure as an example. The course exercise (see below) also gives opportunity to learn the application of safety assessment techniques.
