The masters course in space engineering was established at Cranfield University in 1987 to meet the requirement of the space industry for high quality employees with relevant skills. The course has evolved since then as the needs of the industry have changed but, more than ever, we are working with industry to ensure our curriculum is up to date. In fact, the companies actively support the course by employing our graduates, providing research projects, and in some cases by providing important course modules.

The MSc in Astronautics and Space Engineering will equip you with the skills required to pursue a successful career in the space industries or undertake further research.

Group Design Project

Our group project enables students to work together, for example, on a current space agency mission concept, with each student responsible for a specific sub-system. This gives students the opportunity to work in a virtual industrial environment and develop skills required to work within a team. Many projects involve collaboration with industry.

Learn from our experience

You will be taught by a small team of dedicated space engineering specialists, including Course Director Dr Peter Roberts, a specialist in astrodynamics, space debris mitigation and systems engineering, recently seconded to Astrium; Dr Jenny Kingston, a specialist in space systems engineering of small and low-cost satellites; and Dr Steve Hobbs, whose research background is in sensor systems and Earth observation and atmospheric science. Recent sponsors of their work includes UK research councils, the Royal Society, British National Space Centre, the European Space Agency and the European Commission.
