Technical Schools Research Students Training Programme
The School of Engineering (SoE) and School of Applied Sciences (SAS) run a joint training programme for all their research students. This is structured as a series of 'day events', coupled with smaller interactive group sessions running several times during the week for some topics.
There are three parts to this programme, which are designed to augment the skills that research students will need in the early stages, mid research and concluding stages of their research studies.
The programme aims to equip research students with some of the additional skills that they will need both during their research studies and in their future careers. It is deliberately not directed at individual research areas, since specific assistance is available from the appropriate supervisors.
All full time research students, apart from EngD students who have their own training schedule, must attend this programme. A record of this formal training will be included as part of each student's review process. Part time students are encouraged to attend as much as possible from this programme, where possible combining attendance with supervision visits.
During the AY 08/09, the M00 Research Planning and Report Writing Module will now include the Lecture on Statistical Treatment of Experimental Data by Prof JR Nichols. This module is open to all SoE and SAS research students. There is a booking link to this on the early stages web pages. The support for statistics will be strengthened by the provision of regular bookable statistics clinics.
EngD students are welcome to attend any parts of the training programme by arrangement, again please contact Alison Whaley (SAS).
It is intended that this initiative will act as a social forum for all research students in addition to providing formal training.
