Space Research Centre

Cranfield’s Space Research Centre is a leading European centre for postgraduate teaching and research in space. We have around 500 alumni across the global space industry. Our goal is to teach and research in areas directly relevant to the international space industry.

  • Teaching: the successful MSc course in Astronautics and Space Engineering prepares students with backgrounds in engineering, physical science and mathematics for careers in the global space industry
  • Research: Current project areas are (1) sustainable space systems, (2) space applications (especially radar Earth observation and planetary exploration), (3) space system design and business models, and (4) dynamics and control. In all areas, a system engineering approach shapes our research.
  • Other activies: In addition to research and teaching, Centre staff provide expertise to the space insurance industry, support the development of international space engineering standards, and help to organise professional society activities in the space sector.

The Centre is based in the School of Engineering’s Department of Aerospace Engineering. Many of our activities draw on the breadth of expertise available across the whole university.
