Defence Research

In April 2003 the MoD announced the inception of the ‘Human Factors Integration’ Defence Technology Centre (HFI DTC) which researches and demonstrates technologies to support the development of a range of defence capabilities. Aerosystems International leads the consortium.  In 2006 the contract was renewed for a further three-year period.  The Department of Systems Engineering and Human Factors at Cranfield is one of the principal members of the HFI DTC.  Other members are Birmingham University, Brunel University, Cranfield University (DCMT), Lockheed Martin UK Integrated Systems Ltd, MBDA Ltd and Systems Engineering and Assessment Ltd.

In 2008 the HFI DTC was the recipient of the Ergonomics Society President’s Medal (2008), for significant contributions to original research, the development of methodology and the application of knowledge within the field of ergonomics.

However, the Department has also been involved in many other aspects of defence research with all branches of the UK armed forces and also those from overseas.  Details of some of the research and consultancy activities can be found on the research pages of this web site.
