Department of Engineering Photonics
The Department of Engineering Photonics is one of the UKs leading optical sensing and instrumentation research centres. The department's research portfolio is broad, encompassing fibre optic sensors, optical flow measurement instrumentation, speckle interferometry and medical imaging. The emphasis of our activities lies in the development of instrumentation to tackle engineering measurement problems, while offering scope for more speculative, blue skies research.
The primary functions of the group fall into two categories: Postgraduate Training and Contract Research
Postgraduate Training
The Department of Engineering Photonics offers a stimulating environment for research students, with state-of-the-art facilities housed in a newly built suite of laboratories. The broad remit of the department ensures that as well as becoming experts in their own field, each student is exposed to a range of optical technologies and techniques. Much of the research is interdisciplinary, offering the opportunity to work in collaboration with researchers. The quality of training and breadth of experience is reflected in the fact that all of the PhD and MSc students that have trained within the Department of Engineering Photonics have found the jobs that they wanted - be it in a patent office, in an industrial research and development group, as a postdoctoral researcher or in production engineering. We hope to add a few case studies to our web site soon.
Contract Research
The Department of Engineering Photonics undertakes research funded by the Research Councils, the Royal Society, the European Commission and a range of industrial clients. We have a good track record of developing practical, portable instrumentation that may be used off-site to perform measurements in challenging environments.
