Centre for Grid Computing

The Centre for Grid Computing has developed a Grid-enabled data communication protocol within the context of an EPSRC/DTI grant (£ 0.75 million) “Grid-oriented Storage (GOS)”, an EPSRC grant (£470k) "Accelerating NFS/CIFS to produce a tenfold performance improvement for Office/Database applications over the WAN/Grid" , an EC FP6 grant (€400k) “EuroAsiaGrid” and an EC FP7 grant (€1.02 million) “QuickLinux”. This protocol can accelerate tenfold Office, Databases, Web and Media applications on the Internet/Grid. This protocol is the first of its kind worldwide and a RFC (Request for Comments) is now being drafted in an attempt to include it in the Internet Protocol suite.

From January 2007, the GOS invention led to invitations to present demonstrations and talks at Princeton University, Carnegie Mellon University, Cambridge University (Computer Lab), Oxford University, Edinburgh University, York University and King’s College London, etc. A number of collaborations have been fostered with industrial giants, including IBM, BBC, Xerox, CERN, Rolls Royce, HP and EADS. In 2007 the GOS work won an ACM/IEEE Super Computing Award.

The Centre for Grid Computing is also pioneering in Grid Computing education. In 2005, the Centre launched a new MSc option in Grid Computing and e-Engineering that is the first in UK (lined up with MSc in e-Science at Physics Department at Edinburgh University) and the second in the world after University of Amsterdam.
