Cranfield Safety & Accident Investigation Centre
Postgraduate Programmes in aviation safety and investigation
Introduction
The Cranfield Safety and Accident Investigation Centre offers two paths for study leading to the award of a postgraduate degree. Prospective students can choose between the part-time MSc programme in Safety and Accident Investigation, which is made up of 50% taught courses and 50% research, or a 100% research-based MPhil / PhD degree, which can be taken either part- or full-time.
MSc Programme in Safety and Accident Investigation (Air Transport)
The MSc provides students with the knowledge and skills to conduct an aircraft accident investigation in accordance with the standards and recommended practices laid out within the International Civil Aviation Organisation Annex 13 to the Chicago Convention (2001) and with due regard to:
- Collection and preservation of evidence

MSc in Airworthiness
The part-time programme is especially relevant to engineers and technologists working in the airworthiness field of aviation safety, either in a regulatory authority or in the industry. The format is especially suitable for those who wish to enhance and focus their knowledge in a structured part-time route while still working.
Through a series of highly focused five-day modules addressing the key aspects of design, construction and maintenance of aircraft, the course takes a pragmatic and wide-ranging approach to aviation safety.
Taught elements are delivered as short-courses at the Cranfield campus, with the research element able to be conducted off-site. A student would expect to spend 2-4 years part-time to complete the MSc.

Research Degrees
The Centre provides the opportunity for gifted students to complete full- or part-time degrees at the MPhil and PhD level in areas relating to safety management and incident / accident investigation. Due to the popularity of this programme, we ask all prospective students to prepare a 2-3 page research proposal detailing their area of research interest and proposed methodology. This helps us assess the applicant's suitability and match up appropriate supervision. Find out more information on research degrees.
