Cranfield Safety and Accident Investigation Centre
Introduction
The Cranfield Safety and Accident Investigation Centre is a specialist unit within the School of Engineering dedicated to high-quality teaching, research and consultancy in transportation safety management and incident / accident investigation.
What we do
The Centre’s link with Accident Investigation extends over more than 30 years. In collaboration with the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch, we have trained over 1,000 air accident investigators from around the world, many of whom have gone on to lead, or participate in some of the most significant investigations.
In recent years, the Centre has built upon its strong international reputation for aircraft accident investigation training to develop investigator training that also suits rail and marine accident investigators through its Fundamentals of Investigation programme. This world-first course was developed in close collaboration with the UK Rail, Marine and Air Accidents Investigation Branches of the Department for Transport and has already trained over 250 investigators.

In addition to our accident investigation activities, the Centre has trained safety professionals from manufacturers, operators, the military and government agencies from across the world through our programmes in safety management systems (SMS); and crisis management to flight data monitoring (FDM); and safety assessment of aircraft systems.
We have also launched two innovative part-time postgraduate programmes aimed at those aiming to work, or currently working in the air transport industry. The Airworthiness MSc is aimed at both military and civil aircraft engineers and is complemented by our Safety & Accident Investigation MSc. More information about postgraduate programmes offered by the Centre can be found here.
The Centre is also involved in a range of research activities ranging from MSc and PhD student supervision to contract research and consultancy projects. Previous clients have included airlines, aerodrome operators, regulators and accident investigation agencies. For more information about our capabilities, please contact us.
