Testimonials - Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) MSc, PgDip, PgCert

Views of the industry

"The course is designed to meet the educational needs of graduates planning to make CFD one of their professional skills. It sets out to bridge the gap between the introductory level of undergraduate courses and the applied expertise acquired by engineers using CFD in industry. Students will gain the knowledge and appreciation of CFD methods necessary for strong foundations to a career in this exciting engineering discipline."

Chris Carey, Fluent Europe's Technical Services Manager

"Computational Fluid Dynamics has traditionally been one of Cranfield University’s traditional strengths in the Aeronautical field. The MSc in CFD course provides an excellent introduction to the subject, and equips students with knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career as CFD and fluid dynamics developers and practicians. The course will also be of benefit to professional engineers who wish to enhance their understanding of theory and gain an "insider’s" perspective of CFD applications."

Views of the students

"The MSc in Computational Fluid Dynamics at Cranfield University is a very relevant and stimulating course, covering the fundamental aspects of the numerical approaches and applications to industrially relevant flows.  At the same time the course exposes the current state of the art and development in CFD and covers the important role played by experimental data in CFD for validation.  The delivery of the course is well suited to mature students like myself, who are already working in industry and who can only take the course part-time.  The range of optional modules is very good; I would have liked to have chosen a few extra.  The ability to remotely access the CFD computing resources and the library facilities at Cranfield is a particularly useful facility since time on campus as a working part-time student is very limited.  I took the course as I wanted to build upon and expand my knowledge as I use CFD in my role as a systems engineer and it complements my background in experimental fluid mechanics. I found the course to be thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable"

Dr Jon Powell, Senior Systems Engineer, Malvern Instruments Ltd

"Choosing the MSc in CFD at Cranfield for the final year of my studies was the best
decisions of my life so far. During this academic year I consolidated my aeronautical
knowledge and specialised in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics. Cranfield
offers excellent studying conditions, especially in the field of CFD, with well
equipped IT facilities, abundance of software and most importantly, state-of-the-art
High Performance Computing centre. On top of that there is highly qualified
academic staff that actively takes part in the development of new, pioneering CFD
techniques. What should also be mentioned is the fantastic university library with an
immense catalogue and access to online databases.”

Lukasz Paluszek, ESTEC

"The CFD course at Cranfield covers all major areas of CFD methods and applications including a separate module on the role of experimental data in CFD. I found it extremely useful and, in my view, it can provide those wishing to excel in the field of computational engineering with an excellent opportunity for professional development."

Shamoon Jamshed, Engineer, SUPARCO

“The course introduced me to the basics of the mathematics that is solved behind the screen of a commercial CFD solver. The course is taught by staff who are active researchers in the field of CFD. In addition, Cranfield University offers a sophisticated learning environment including well equipped labs, parallel computing facility and library. The course is well structured and suits both freshers and experienced professionals. It has turned me from a fresh Aeronautical Engineering Graduate to a CFD professional. The course has provided me the confidence and potential to model a diverse spectrum of engineering problems. The course exposes the graduates to a demanding job market.”

Kailash Manohara Selvan, Motors Aerodynamics Engineer with Dyson Ltd, Malmesbury, UK

“MSc in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at Cranfield University is a really good choice if you want to get an extensive knowledge and hand-on experience in that field. A wide range of modules allows you to get as much from the course as possible. After eleven months spend at Cranfield University you will really feel confident about your knowledge and abilities. Lecturers are experts with an enormous experience. They do their best to make the course interesting, they are very kind and extremely helpful. So if you have any problems, all you need to do is just ask. Apart from standard classes, the university gives an excellent occasion to have a flight within a laboratory aircraft Jetstream. Pilots will make it the unforgettable experience. I really recommend Cranfield University and Computational Fluid Dynamics course to all students. During this 11-month period I have learned a lot about CFD. Good luck with your course and enjoy it!”

Pawel Slabosz, Engineer Warsaw Aviation Institute

"I consider my course experience at Cranfield University as a student in the MSc Computational Fluid Dynamics as a highly rewarding experience. First of all, as a French student I appreciated the welcome of foreign students and this MSc year is an undeniable improvement in my English skills. Also, I believe that this MSc course well agrees with the different backgrounds of students attending: several modules are taught at the beginning of the year in order to provide basics knowledge of Fluid Mechanics, and Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations for example. The MSc course proposes a large range of optional modules that makes the student approach various specific aspects of CFD. These modules combined with an assignment for each is to my mind a relevant way to approach CFD problems with direct applications. On the social aspect of the course experience, I appreciated the group projects we were given but regret there were too little. Even if they are crowded by the times of the Thesis work, the computational resources available for this course are remarkable and very useful for complex computations. If I had to make a choice again, I would definitely choose again the MSc CFD at Cranfield as I believe it is a strong asset for a future career as an engineer."

Romain Pain, PhD Researcher, ONERA

"Taking an MSc in CFD at Cranfield University is a rewarding and fascinating experience which can open new avenues in the professional career of the student. The curriculum is rigorous and demanding. The MSc is based on the mathematical foundations of CFD and also reflects the interdisciplinary nature of CFD through the modules which span from aerospace to micro- and nanoflow applications. The course will prepare students for a career in industry as well as offering a stepping stone for further research studies."

Konstantinos Karamolegkos, PhD Researcher, Cranfield University

"The MSc in CFD at Cranfield University is an ideal course to undertake for anyone wanting to gain a thorough understanding of the mathematics and physics behind all aspects of CFD and the current application of CFD in many areas of industry and research; this is made easier with the knowledge and enthusiasm of teaching staff. As a part-time student employed off-campus I found the MSc to be perfectly suited to this approach to study; from the flexibility of attending the course modules to the staff support off-campus, not only from the FMaCS group but also from the other university departments (e.g. the library). The knowledge I have gained from the course has been invaluable to me for my day-to-day work as an engineer."

Stuart Wybrow, Aerodynamics Engineer, Portsmouth Aviation Ltd

"The MSC in CFD is an excellent choice to get into this field. As part of my European Double Degree Programme, I had the opportunity to discover how I want to address my career. The course covers all the fundamental aspects of fluid mechanics and numerical methods and a wide broad of different applications in the industry. The structure of the course is very practical and allows you to develop good skills for starting a career in CFD right after the course. The staff are very professional and they follow your progress carefully. This year has been very worthwhile and it has been definitely one step forward."
