Department of Aerospace Engineering
The Department of Aerospace Engineering, led by Professor Marin Guenov, is comprised of 4 groups.
To find out more about these Groups, please refer to the following:
- Aircraft Design Group
- Applied Aerodynamics Group
- Dynamics, Simulation and Control Group
- Engineering Design Group
The Department of Aerospace Engineering’s objective is to be internationally recognised as the first choice for research and education in Aerospace Design and Advanced Engineering Design Methods. It is one of the world’s largest centres of University aerospace design education and research.
The Department performs research on a wide range of Aerospace Design topics, from conceptual to detail design of civil, military and Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles. It is also leading research into advanced technologies, such as laminar flow, avionics, more electric aircraft and advanced metallic and composite airframe structures.
The Department has access to a wide range of Industry-Standard experimental and computational facilities for structural testing, composite research, rapid prototyping and extensive UAV avionic and flight simulation facilities.
The Department has designed, built and flight-tested a range of Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The latter activities have led to the award of multi-million pound research and development contracts.
The Department is currently educating some 150 MSc and PhD students in the field of aerospace design. The Department also offers a wide-ranging series of Continuing Development Short Courses at Cranfield as well as many other parts of the world.
