Engineering Design Group
The world is undergoing significant economic, demographic, and man-made climatic changes, which require a substantial improvement in the cost effectiveness of most transport modes, including aircraft. Such a step change necessitates a significant advancement and integration of the aircraft product development processes in order to deliver new configurations which consider the conflicting requirements of all stakeholders. Solving these problems requires a multidisciplinary approach, which is the focus of the Engineering Design Group.
The Engineering Design Group is conducting internationally leading research in the following areas:
- Integrated Product Development with emphasis on Multidisciplinary Design, Analysis and Optimisation (MDAO)
- Design Automation, including Distributed and Intelligent Design for X and business/engineering trade-offs in the product introduction process
- Innovative Concepts for Integrated Engineering Systems in Aerospace
Our research work involves industrial partners such as:
Airbus Future Projects Office (France), on aircraft conceptual optimisation and design tools; NLR (Holland), DLR (Germany) and Airbus-UK, on wing MDAO; HP and Engineous (USA), on distributed computational infrastructures;
BAE SYSTEMS, on Requirements Decomposition, Customer models and processes.
