Course overview
Cranfield University’s Risk Centre offers our updated short course in Environmental Risk Governance. Risk management is established in the environmental goods and services sector as a primary contributor to effective environmental protection, as a means of targeting investment and regulatory intervention, and as a source of strategic advantage for organisations. In a world of technological and organisational change, executives, policy specialists, regulators, process operators and environmental managers are expected to hold a core competency in the assessment, management, communication and governance of environmental risk. In doing so, they become intelligent customers for the receipt of expertise on environmental risk.

Our Environmental Risk Governance short course dovetails an introduction to environmental risk assessment and management with an executive master class and managerial guidance on its implementation within organisations. Supported by seminars and workshop exercises, the primer is intended for personnel seeking to deepen their expertise, practice and delivery of environmental risk management.
Delegates have the option of attending days 1-4 (primer); day 5 alone (master class) or days 1-5 (the full short course).
Who should attend?
The primer offers a solid grounding for new risk managers, environmental quality managers, regulatory affairs staff, operational staff with risk management responsibilities, contractors, regulators, non-governmental organisation advocates, and practically-oriented researchers new to this field. No previous knowledge of environmental risk is required and while a technical background is helpful, it is not essential.
Benefits of attending
- Gain solid grounding in the basic principles of risk management and their application in the environmental goods and services sector, including within utilities
- Firm focus on risk assessment scoping, screening and analysis
- Understanding of different perspectives on governing environmental risks, which risk tools and techniques to use and when, and how to encourage a risk culture in your organisation
- Opportunity to network with others implementing risk management in their organisations
- Connect with recent sector-funded research on environmental risk analysis and management.
Our informal workshop style is also amenable to lively discussion of the more challenging issues such as risk perception, influencing the ‘Board’, and recovering from major organisational incidents.
