Re-skilling for a sustainable future

Between now and September 2010 Cranfield University’s School of Applied Sciences is able to offer free places* on selected short courses** under a HEFCE Economic Challenge Investment Plan (ECIF) for sector re-skilling.

Our re-skilling initiative aims to provide postgraduate level engineers and scientists (STEM*** subject graduates) with expertise development in new areas. Attending the short courses should help eligible individuals to secure employment with a new employer, and will help those looking for a career change to find employment in a new sector. Companies can use the initiative to support the redeployment of personnel.

Most short courses offered by the School of Applied Sciences (10 day short courses are not included for example) are available under this ECIF initiative. A comprehensive list of short courses is available here. ECIF eligibility is indicated in the individual course descriptions. On the first day of the course, delegates will be asked to sign a declaration of current eligibility.

You can benefit from a free short course if you are*:

  • currently unemployed
  • expect to be made redundant
  • on reduced time working arrangements with your present employer due to the current economic downturn.

For example-

You are a science graduate who has been working in the financial sector. You can use the initiative to support your redeployment in another sector such as the water industry.
*Conditions apply - Delegates are required to meet specific criteria to be eligible for this funding. The number of funded places is limited to 140 in total and two courses per individual. While successful delegates receive free fee places under the ECIF initiative, they will be expected to pay for their own accommodation, travel costs and associated subsistence. View the Terms & Conditions for full details.
** The majority of short courses offered by the School of Applied Sciences until 30 September 2010 are included. A comprehensive list of short courses is available here. Those that qualify for the ECIF initiative are indicated.
***STEM refers to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
