Aim
To gain an understanding of the policy, legislative and regulatory framework, and the specific legislation and regulatory tools used to govern the water sector in the UK and EU.

- international, EC and UK legislation including the Water Framework Directive
- approaches to water management across the world
- independent, water company and public health perspectives on regulation
- water economics
- economic competition and the role of OFWAT
- abstraction regulations and the role of the EA
- role of the drinking water inspectorate
- discharge consents
- trans-boundary water management
- IPPC/BPEO/BATNEEC frameworks
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module the delegate will:
- Be able to explain the need for, and principles behind water policy, legislation and regulation in UK, EU and international contexts.
- Be able to identify the laws relating to water in UK, EU and international contexts, and explain their purpose and their effects.
- Be able to explain the role of the major institutions involved in water regulation within the UK.
- Be able to explain the role of and use key instruments involved in water regulation.
