Career opportunities
The Centre for Water Science's links to industry, underpinned by the reputation of its courses, enable successful students to secure positions and develop their careers in UK water companies, utilities across Europe, the major international engineering consultancies, major engineering and service contractors, and government agencies. Graduates also go on to academic research. Former students are invited to join the Centre's Alumni Association which offers excellent networking opportunities throughout the world.
Testimonials include:
"I chose this course because I was interested in water treatment, and as an Engineer, I feel like my duty to be part of environmental friendly processes.
I think the best aspects of the master are how it is divided in three main parts. First theory on all the different processes to treat potable water, wastewater or sludge (but with exercises, visits, and labs to get a more practical look). Adding lectures on finance and project management allows us to be more ready to work in industry.
Then group design projects, which shows us the plus and minuses of working in groups, be able to organise ourselves, and design an engineered solution. The oral presentation develops our oral skills as well.
And finally the thesis project, which gives us a research approach on water processes. We have to handle by ourselves a project which goes from literature review to experiments and discussion of the results. Doing the project in industry gives a dimension of reality to our project. I did my thesis with Thames Water on oxygen transfer in the innovative IFAS processes for the treatment of wastewater.
Therefore, I think this master course prepares us very well to our future career. My plans for the future are to work first as a process engineer on technical projects, maybe become chartered. On a longer term, I would like to orientate myself towards project management."
"The MSc course in Water and Wastewater Engineering provided me with the opportunity to gain invaluable experience and excellent training to prepare me for a career within the water industry. My studies at Cranfield University lead me on to learning about process technologies, engineering processes and management strategy associated with the protection and improvement of the water environment.
The course was hard work and intense but with expert tuition on-hand and support that can be only be described as exceptional, I was able to gain a great deal of knowledge from the course in a short time.
The group design project section of the programme was very important to me as it gave me the chance to tackle actual treatment problems present within the industry.
As part of my MSc, I worked for one of the larger water companies and during this time I made important contacts, learnt a massive amount about the Wastewater industry and gained an incite as to the working of this company.
Currently I am working as a Process Engineer for Wessex Water providing support and performing outline design on a number of different and varied projects.
I would recommend anyone to take this course who is serious about pursuing a career in either the Water or Wastewater industry."
"The Cranfield MSc Water and Wastewater Engineering course provided an excellent springboard for a career in the water industry. It is well structured, and highly regarded by employers. I enjoyed my time at Cranfield, and the experience has certainly been worthwhile."
