Aim
The aim of the EU commission is to reduce the greenhouse gas emission by 20%. This target is to be achieved by 2020. The proposed renewable energy target of the UK is 20%. This module aims to provide students with an understanding of how the emergent offshore renewable energy industry is managed to meet the 20% target.
Syllabus
- Potential for offshore renewable energy by type around UK
- Environmental concerns of wind, wave and tidal systems
- Economics and resourcing of renewable energy projects, ROCs, political and governmental issues, planning consent, licensing and regulations
- Regional issues. Renewable energy in Europe
- Greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuelled power generation, possible effects on global temperature change
Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:
- Understand the need to develop renewable energy sources
- Understand the environmental issues concerning the development of offshore renewable energy sources
- Understand the economic issues concerning the development of offshore renewable energy sources
- Understand the political issues concerning the development of offshore renewable energy sources
- Apply acquired knowledge in the planning of offshore renewable energy projects
- Benefit from an in-depth knowledge of renewable energy policies in other European countries
