Aim

The aim of the EU commission is to reduce the greenhouse gas emission by 20%. This target is to be achieved by 2020. The proposed renewable energy target of the UK is 20%.  This module aims to provide students with an understanding of how the emergent offshore renewable energy industry is managed to meet the 20% target.

Syllabus

  • Potential for offshore renewable energy by type around UK
  • Environmental concerns of wind, wave and tidal systems
  • Economics and resourcing of renewable energy projects, ROCs, political and governmental issues, planning consent, licensing and regulations
  • Regional issues. Renewable energy in Europe
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuelled power generation, possible effects on global temperature change

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the need to develop renewable energy sources
  2. Understand the environmental issues concerning the development of offshore renewable energy sources
  3. Understand the economic issues concerning the development of offshore renewable energy sources
  4. Understand the political issues concerning the development of offshore renewable energy sources
  5. Apply acquired knowledge in the planning of offshore renewable energy projects
  6. Benefit from an in-depth knowledge of renewable energy policies in other European countries
