Course overview

Professional resource managers must be able to apply environmental, technical and economic parameters to the specification and implementation of a range of projects and contract procedures, in order to control risk and maximise control of project development and outcomes.

Course description

  • project management processes, development of objectives, time cost relationships, project management in practice (design, options, outcomes evaluation and feasibility).
  • project definition and brief, the specification, project scope process and scope management, process mapping, analysis of time and cost plans, financing projects, cost estimating and management, cost benefit analysis, the concepts of risk management, use of project planning computer packages
  • types of project and project procedure, project documents: development of specifications, bills of quantity, schedules and plans.
  • project safety and the implementation of ISO 14001; project law and its implications
  • subject project: each student to complete a design project including a complete set of documents including design drawings, bills of quantity, schedules and contracts.project choices include: drainage scheme design, remediation of a pipeline development, design of a small earth dam, creation of a wetland habitat, restoration of a landfill site, construction of a sports ground, reinstatement of a sports ground.

On successful completion of this module the delegate will be able to:

  1. Recognise the project management process and project objectives.
  2. Identify types of contract and their application for a given project.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of relevant project law and current safety legislation.
  4. Understand project planning and risk management, and identify project components as a basis for planning and control.
  5. Understand and apply financial and economic analysis, with particular reference to cost benefit analysis.
  6. Produce documentation to ensure appropriate development of a project.
  7. Specify project requirement within the project brief.
  8. Demonstrate skills in: Project management, Time management, Team work, Problem solving, and Communication and presentation.
