PhD Studentship - Information Modelling for Service Feedback

Application deadline:
31 May 2012

Duration of award:
3 years

Award type:
PhD

Supported by EPSRC and Rolls-Royce, a studentship up to £20,000 p.a. for 3 years plus UK/EU fees* is available

EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Through-life Engineering Services
(hosted by Cranfield University and Durham University).

The £10.5 million EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Through-life Engineering Services will provide world-class capability in the UK to enable industry to deliver high value products with outstanding availability, predictability and reliability with the lowest life cycle cost. The core partners include Rolls-Royce plc, BAE Systems, MoD and Bombardier Transport. In addition, the Centre is also supported by seven industry partners and six Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTNs) and trade organisations.

Cranfield University is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake this exciting research project. The PhD researcher will study the history and the through life use (as used) perspective of mechanical components and the impact of use on the type and extent of degradation.

The study will identify the information required to represent the use and develop accelerated testing of the components to simulate the ‘as used’ scenarios.  It is observed that wear, cracking, fatigue and corrosion are the top degradation mechanisms for the aerospace and similar components.

This project will study the ‘as used’ perspective of mechanical components and the impact of use on the type and extent of degradation. The project will identify the information required to represent this in-service use and develop accelerated testing regimes of the components to simulate the ‘as used’ scenarios. The research will fuse the ‘as-used’ data about the components with ‘as-maintained’ data and integrate with the degradation analysis results.

The study will develop an information model to manage the service information for feedback to design and manufacturing. The model will be implemented as a prototype software system for validation.

The successful candidate will be based at either Cranfield University and will also spend some time in industrial sponsor sites as and when needed.

Start Date: As soon as possible

Doctoral Training Centres

This higher research degree is associated with one of our Doctoral Training Centre, which is funded in part by the Research Councils and industry. A generic core skills training programme is provided for all research students. This is structured as a series of half day or full day events and acts as a social and networking forum to foster and develop Cranfield’s research student community.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be classified as UK Home student and have a First or Second Class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such mechanical/aerospace/manufacturing/electronics/computer science and engineering. Knowledge or experience and an MSc in a relevant subject are highly desirable. Experience in information modelling, software system design and software development will be preferable.

Funding

Funding
*Supported by the EPSRC Centre, studentships will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of up to £20,000 p.a. for three years. To be eligible for this funding applicants must have:
• no restrictions on how long you can stay in the UK, i.e. no visa restrictions or have ‘settled status’, and
• have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the grant and
• not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. (This does not apply to UK or EU nationals).
All EU nationals are eligible to receive a fees-only award if they do not have ‘settled status’ in the UK.
All non-EU nationals are very unlikely to be eligible for this funding under the Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations 1997.
