The innovative MTech programme is unique to Cranfield. It combines taught course MSc study, company-based research, professional development and industrial experience. The total study period is two years and offers teaching and research to develop effective academic expertise as well as directly relevant industrial research experience to progress your career in your chosen sector.
The MTech model is available for a number of courses. For information on the modules relating to the MTech programmes below, please refer to the specific course sites listed to the right.
The programme provides suitably qualified candidates with company sponsorship or a company financed bursary of about £10,500 per annum plus the payment of fees (at UK/EU rate) and a laptop to support your study.
The MTech model is unique in the significant level of investment provided by companies and organisations engaged with Cranfield. Students benefit from:
- access to significant funding through the sponsoring organisations
- contact with industry professionals through Cranfield’s strong relationships with companies
- the opportunity to undertake real-life project work, applying the skills and knowledge developed in the taught element of the course
- a programme which is closely aligned to the recruitment needs of the supporting organisations.
There are a number of benefits for sponsoring organisations - For more information download a brochure (pdf)
The course comprises eight assessed modules, group projects, an individual research project portfolio (the MTech thesis), and an industrial placement report.
Students spend from October to December at Cranfield undertaking five compulsory modules. The following 12 months are then spent on placement in the students’ sponsoring company undertaking a portfolio of project work before returning to Cranfield to complete the remaining taught modules and the group design projects over a period of four months.
Students subsequently return to their sponsoring company for two to three months and complete the MTech degree placement by writing and submitting a portfolio-based thesis.

Industrial research projects are agreed with the collaborating company; each student being supervised by an academic and mentored by an industrial project supervisor. Research project agreements are jointly established between the University and industrial sponsor to ensure that the programme of work is suitable and that it will achieve the high level of performance required. Where possible, students are encouraged to gain student membership of chartered institutions and use the MTech to gain evidence to aid their progress towards chartered status upon successful completion of the course.
The MTech is now a well-established model. Students and companies alike recognise the benefits of these collaborative partnerships. Where an individual is seeking to strengthen their technical expertise as well as gain extensive research experience the MTech provides a dedicated and funded route to achieve this objective. Students also derive benefit from extensive interaction with both full-time and part-time students as they all attend the MSc programme modules during the two years of their period of study.
