Course overview

The Principles of Design For... course is an innovative online course. It is aimed at those working with engineers, including technicians, graduate engineers and non-engineering professionals across the defence, aerospace, naval and land sectors.

Learning Outcomes

This course will enable an engineer to understand the major factors which influence the engineering design of any component. It will enable them to form a story board life-cycle model identifying the important phases of a system's life, to identify key information sources for each phase and the imperatives for each stakeholder.

 

Course is scheduled twice a year in March and September (minimum number of delegates apply). 
Duration - approximately over 16-17 weeks (average time spent 5 hours per week)

Delivered wholly online. Accessible worldwide (subject to internet availability)

Course description

The course comprises seven sections and a number of study units delivered as an audio-visual presentation, discussion questions and seven assessed assignments. These provide the ‘tools’ required for the group project. The Group project involves working together in teams on a realistic project to fulfil demanding objectives within a tight time schedule and delivering results to a high professional standard.

Design For Supportability
The challenge of designing for supportability, definitions, relationship between supportability, reliability and availability, challenges of designing a supportable system, example of MART, MTBF and IA .
