Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre

Cranfield's Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre's mission is: To deliver improvements in manufacturing performance.

Cranfield's Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre is one of the UK's strongest research and teaching groups in this field. We also have a highly active community of students undertaking  research programmes in the Centre.
Manufacturing at Cranfield is concerned with developing sustainable solutions to real-world industry problems.  We do this by adopting a systems approach to identifying and tackling root causes in an evidence-based manner.

The Centre supports in the region of 100 postgraduate students. Our students are registered on a range of Masters courses, including the prestigious Operations Excellence MSc which was established in partnership with Rolls-Royce and in collaboration with the University of Cambridge. Many in the manufacturing community will also know of The Fellowship in Manufacturing Management that staff in the centre have supported.

The Centre's academic staff specialise in sustainable manufacturing, manufacturing systems, simulation and modelling techniques, manufacturing processes, energy efficiency, supply chain, manufacturing management and costing. We work closely with colleagues from other schools and departments. This allows the Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre to address a broad range of business problems in competitive sustainable manufacturing operations and services.

The Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre has a constant track record of EPSRC support. It is internationally renowned for its publication record. The Centre leads the Cranfield input into the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing (CIM) in Industrial Sustainability. The Centre benefits from extensive industrial support which underpins student project and research work.
