Manufacturing Department

The Manufacturing Department is recognised internationally for its research, education, training and consultancy. We are a major contributor to Cranfield’s ranking of third in the UK for the impact of its mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing research (2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE)). Under the direction of Professor Rajkumar Roy our focus is on manufacturing systems and manufacturing management organised across three key centres:
- Centre for Competitive Creative Design (C4D)
- Decision Engineering Centre incorporating cost engineering
- Integrated Maintenance Centre
- Manufacturing Management Centre
- Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre
At University-level we are a major contributor to Cranfield's Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre which currently has two major research themes, Manufacturing Technology and Product-Service Systems (PSS).This provides leadership and support to both academia and industry, and outputs have been used to inform and support the new Government manufacturing strategy.
Our postgraduate courses have been designed and developed in collaboration with industry to ensure they provide the skills and knowledge organizations require. Our excellence in manufacturing education and training is recognised by a number of professional institutions within the manufacturing sector including the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).
In line with the changing needs of the sector, we have recently introduced additional Masters courses, which aim to develop highly employable graduates able to respond to the challenges and demands of modern manufacturing – MSc Global Product Development and Management, MSc Sustainable Manufacturing, MSc Through-life System Sustainment and MDes/PgDip/PgCert Design, Strategy and Leadership.
The Manufacturing Programme also hosts the cross campus MSc Integrated Vehicle Health Management course which is run from the IVHM Centre.
The latest addition to the Manufacturing Programme is the Operations Leadership - Fellowship in Operations Leadership PgCert.
