Centre for Climate Change Adaptation

Climate changes will vary spatially and temporally, and the impacts will be sector specific. Tailored research is required to identify the risks and and evaluate potential adaptations. For the UK, hotter drier summers and warmer wetter winters are forecast, together with more extremes. Internationally, impacts vary from country to country, but with more losers than winners.
Adaptation is a driver for much of our research, consultancy and training. Most studies require a multi-disciplinary approach, bring the relevant expertise and resources together. The virtual Cranfield Centre for Climate Change Adaptation provides a co-ordinating role and a central point-of-contact for our clients.
Example activities:
Climate change impacts and adaption - Land and Water management
The impacts of climate change are likely to be felt first in land use, food production and water management. The impacts need to be evaluated in a holistic assessment, understanding the complex interactions, and the potential adaptation options and responses.
Community Resilience to Extreme Weather (CREW)
The project ‘Community Resilience to Extreme Weather' (CREW) was established to gain a better understanding of the effects of future climate change on extreme weather events, and to develop a set of tools for improving local-community resilience.
Implementing the Climate Change Act 2008
Within the UK, the Climate Change Act 2008 introduced the Adaptation Reporting Power which allows Government to ask public sector organisations and statutory undertakers to report on their assessment of the risks climate change poses to them, and their proposals for adapting to climate change. The Risk Centre is playing an important research role for Defra during the first round of the Adaptation Reporting Power.
