Off Road Dynamics Facility

The Off Road Dynamics Facility (ORDF) is the only centre of its type in the UK to study the relationship between machines and the soil environment in controlled conditions. Our researchers provide important research information to organisations operating across automotive, motorsport, aerospace, agriculture, construction, defence, sports surfaces and telecommunications. Innovative research equipment associated with the facility includes:

We also operate a rolling-road dynamometer for engine development work. This is co-located with the whole vehicle articulation rig.

Simulating extreme off-road environments helps evaluate how any machine - SUV, rally car, tractor - interacts with soil. Our expertise extends beyond the soil-vehicle interface.

"Your Off-Road Dynamics Facility is impressive in that it comprises a wide range of unique research equipment. Your close collaboration with industry in research and development is a model for academic institutions. The enthusiasm for research shown by your staff and postgraduate students ensures that your group will continue making significant contributions to the field."

Professor Jo Wong, off-road and terramechanics research specialist
