Background
Dr Sean Tyrrel, MPhil, PhD, C.Env, FCIWEM, graduated from the University of Leeds in 1986 with a degree in Microbiology. He spent two years working as a microbiologist for Anglian Water before taking up a research position at Cranfield University working on iron biofouling in boreholes. In 1990 Sean joined the academic staff at Cranfield. His research focus is on the application of environmental microbiology to the management of wastewater and solid waste. Examples include assessment of risk arising from emissions (including bioaerosols and compost liquor) from composting facilities; faecal pathogen transport from land to surface waters; microbiological quality of irrigation water; land-based wastewater treatment; issues surrounding the application of anaerobic digestion residues to land; biofouling and biocorrosion in water supply boreholes; and biological removal of iron from groundwater.
Dr Sean Tyrrel has a significant track record in MSc course development and teaching administration. He has supervised more than 100 BSc, MSc, MSc by Research, MPhil, PhD students to completion. Sean lectures to MSc students on a range of issues related to water quality, water pollution control, waste management, health, sanitation and catchment management. He has worked in Pakistan, Uganda and several European countries.
