Current activities

Dr Benny Tjahjono is the Programme Director of the Manufacturing Programme incorporating six MSc courses. Within this programme he lectures Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Simulation Modelling. He has also been invited to deliver lectures and to present his research at a number of universities and companies overseas.

Dr Tjahjono is currently leading a research team to work on the EPSRC-funded project entitled An Evolutionary Approach to Rapid Development of Simulation Models (grant number EP/E037631/1). This project aims to investigate a new method to rapidly build simulation models using template and model pattern. Reduction in model development time is believed to have a significant impact in positively disrupting the barriers of simulation usage and in improving the uptake of simulation and modelling techniques within manufacturing industries.

Background

Dr Benny Tjahjono has a strong academic, research and industrial background in simulation and modelling of manufacturing systems. He has been working closely with global companies such as Ford and Rolls-Royce on a number of industrially funded projects associated with the decision making process using discrete-event simulation. The companies have been able to gain benefits from the projects which typically include inventory reduction, productivity improvements and design/redesign of production facilities, which all contributed to the improved competitiveness and persistent growth of the companies’ manufacturing operations.

Dr Tjahjono holds a first degree in Electrical Engineering, an MSc and a PhD both in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. He won a scholarship scheme sponsored by the British Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office/ BUNZL/ Cranfield University, for undertaking the Manufacturing MSc course at Cranfield University, and was also awarded the Professor and Ann Cherry Prize upon completion of that course. He subsequently received a scholarship from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with the support of the Department of Trade and Industry, British Universities and the industry sectors, to pursue his PhD in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, also at Cranfield University.

Dr Tjahjono is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (previously IEE).
