Background
Professor Paul Shore is Head of the Cranfield University Precision Engineering Institute. He is Director and Principal Investigator of the EPSRC Ultra Precision and Structured Surfaces Integrated Knowledge Centre and the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacture in Ultra Precision.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the President of the European Society of Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (euspen).
He trained in the machine tool industry, later he studied Production Engineering at Liverpool Polytechnic before undertaking a MSc and PhD at Cranfield in Precision Engineering. He worked at the Cranfield Unit for Precision Engineering, where he co-ordinated the UK’s 1st DTI funded project under the National Initiative in Nanotechnology entitled “Ultra precision machining research”. Thereafter he joined the International SKF Group where he held a number of technical positions prior to becoming responsible for the Groups Precision Production Engineering research. He worked throughout the world for SKF developing and implementing, strategic manufacturing technologies. Whilst working for SKF he and his family lived in the Netherlands and Sweden.
Paul returned to Cranfield in 2002 to re-establish Cranfield’s Precision Engineering activity to its present pre-eminent status as a leading Precision Engineering research centre.
His current research focuses on applications including; next generation lithography systems, space and ground based telescopes, fusion and solar power research facilities and next generation displays and electronics.
Major research projects and contracts are funded by: EPSRC, RCUK, NASA, ESA, ESO, UK ATC, NPL and the EU FP7.
