Background

Dr Sophie Rocks has had a varied research career to date with interests in inflammatory diseases and biomaterials. She gained experience in the manufacture and characterisation of engineered nanomaterials within the internationally-renowned Microsystems and Nanotechnology Centre at Cranfield University where she was involved in the production and characterisation of nanoparticles and functional ceramics. Sophie joined the Institute of Environment and Health (IEH) as a Toxicologist carrying out risk assessments for a range of chemical compounds in addition to managing projects considering the risk assessment approaches for manufactured nanomaterials and their suitability, as well as the risk associated with emerging nanotechnologies. Sophie continues to act as a consultant for IEH.  Sophie, with Professor Simon Pollard, established The Risk Centre in December 2008.

In September 2008, Sophie was appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee on Hazardous Substances (ACHS) and is a member of the British Toxicological Society (BTS).
