Manufacturing and Materials
Current activities
Dr Mike Robinson specialises in the field of aqueous corrosion and has more than twenty five years experience of teaching, research and investigating corrosion across most industrial sectors.
He organises and presents corrosion courses for the oil and gas industry, both in this country and overseas. His research interests include microbial corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement, cathodic protection, exfoliation, filiform corrosion, protective coatings, inhibition and corrosion monitoring.
Current research projects are investigating sacrificial coatings for cadmium replacement, oilfield corrosion inhibitors, hydrogen embrittlement of duplex stainless steels, electroplating of active metals and corrosion-fatigue of high strength stainless steels.
Clients
Clients from government agencies and industry, including aerospace, defence, process, chemical and offshore oil and gas.
Background
Dr Mike Robinson studied for a BSc hons in metallurgy and a PhD in corrosion at Leeds University before working in higher education in Wellington, New Zealand. He returned to the UK in 1978 and took up a post at Cranfield University, first as a Research Officer, then a Teaching Fellow, Senior Lecturer and Reader. He currently lectures in corrosion, metallurgy and materials selection and leads an active research group studying a wide range of topics in aqueous corrosion. He is a member of the Institute of Corrosion and a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy.
