Current activities
Dr Andreas Nocker was appointed as Lecturer for Drinking Water Microbiology in November 2010. His main areas of interest comprise, but are not limited to, molecular diagnostics for rapid detection of microorganisms, biofilm research, assessment of disinfection efficacy, and identification of novel antimicrobial compounds. A special focus in his research is the selective detection of live microbes in mixtures comprising both live and dead cells, the assessment of the viability status of cells, and stress profiling, for example after treatment with biocidal substances.
He is currently involved in a number of international projects in the areas of improving disinfection efficacy, optimisation of technologies to differentiate between live and dead cells, and the development of new pathogen detection technologies. In addition to authoring more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, a patent, and several book chapters, he is the editor of the website www.waterbornepathogens.org, which is an online information resource for industry, academia, and regulators about important pathogens found in different waters.
Background
Dr Andreas Nocker's background is in molecular microbiology. He studied at The University of Tübingen (BS in Biochemistry) and ETH Zürich (MS in Molecular Biology; PhD in Molecular Microbiology). After postgraduate study in economics (WHL, Germany) he moved to a postdoctoral tenure at the Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation at the University of West Florida, followed by a position as Assistant Research Professor at the Center for Biofilm Engineering in Bozeman, Montana. He subsequently gained valuable experience in industry research while working with the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Following a sabbatical at the University of Concepción, Chile, he joined Cranfield University.
