Current activities

Dr Abdul Mouazen is Course Director for Agriculture and Environment Engineering MSc by Research, within the Natural Resources Management Programme.  His current work focuses on combining cutting-edge sensor and system control technology with predictive modeling of the soil-plant-water system at field/sub-field scales, which might be described as ‘second wave’ precision agriculture. Abdul is also working on soil dynamic related projects. The key research area are:

  • Precision agriculture
  • Finite element modelling of soil-tyre and soil-tillage tools interaction
  • Development of sensors and measurement systems for agriculture, environment and food engineering
  • Near infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics tools
  • Improvement of ard ploughs
  • Soil management in controlled and non-controlled traffic systems
  • Soil tillage & soil compaction
  • Mechanical weeding
  • Soil engaged equipments

Background

Dr Mouazen joined Cranfield University as a Senior Lecturer in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering in December 2007. He has background in the application of engineering principles to soil and water management, with specific applications in soil dynamics, tillage, traction, compaction, mechanical weeding, soil remediation and management. He is an expert in visible (vis) and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and chemometric tools, which enabled him to develop one of three internationally patented on-line measurement systems of soil properties. Dr Mouazen graduated in Agricultural Engineering at the University of Aleppo in Syria and subsequently studied for a diploma of high studies (equivalent to MSc) in horticulture at the University of Aleppo. He then achieved a PhD in Agriculture (Soil Tillage Machinery) at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Abdul started his career as a university assistant at Aleppo University. He worked as a lecturer, assistant professor and associate professor in Agricultural Engineering at the Aleppo University. He was a part-time postdoctoral researcher at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium from 1999 – 2002. He worked as a full-time Senior Researcher at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven between 2002 and 2007, leading a group on soil technology. During this period Abdul was also involved in teaching and research. Dr. Mouazen is an associate Editor of Soil & Tillage Research and invited editor on special issue on soil spectroscopy to Geoderma. He has a strong track record of publishing high quality research papers (55 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and 13 book chapters) communicating his findings to wider audiences (52 conference papers) and delivering interim/final reports of project findings to end users.
