Current activities
Dr Thomas Mayr is Director of the National Soil Resources Institute, he has more than 10 years experience in digital soil mapping, a process of capturing soil-landscape relationships using mathematical modelling based on evidence layers such as digital terrain models, lithology, climate and remote sensing. The methodology was originally developed to improve existing soil maps but lately has been adapted to map soil functions and to assess the impact of military training on the environment. He acts as manager of research and consultancy projects related to these and other soil-related topics. In addition, his expertise has been called upon by both the Joint Research Centre and the European Environment Agency.
