Current activities

Mr Andrew Johnstone is piloting 360 degree feedback for students on group projects, and using this feedback as a tool to improve students’ interpersonal and team-working skills. At an interim feedback session, areas for improvement are identified and ways to improve performance are explored.  At a final feedback session, the improvements and approaches to create improvement are reviewed. Andrew is also involved in the HEFCE-funded project ‘Leadership and Good Management’ in the HE Sector.

Background

Prior to joining Cranfield, Andrew spent many years successfully managing operations – first as a Logistics Officer in the Army, and then as a Manufacturing Manager in industry. At Cranfield, he initially joined the Fellowship in the Manufacturing Management Centre, and was a key member of the teaching faculty as well as Programme Director of the Fellowship in Aerospace Manufacture. In India he was Programme Director at the Kalyani Cranfield Manufacturing Management Centre, where he played a major role in managing and delivering two professional manufacturing management programmes and several short courses. Currently he is a member of the manufacturing faculty delivering material on MSc programmes.  He is applying his strong management and operational background to two areas: improving management systems in organisations, in particular in the HE sector, and introducing ways to help students develop their team-working and inter-personal skills throughout their degree studies.

Andrew obtained a BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Royal Military College, and a BA from the Open University. After completing the Fellowship in Manufacturing Management at Cranfield University he moved into manufacturing, and while managing manufacturing operations he was accredited as a Certified Practitioner in Inventory and Production Management; he also studied for an Executive MBA from Cranfield University.  A chartered engineer and member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, he is also a member of the Chartered Management Institute.  He is a qualified trainer for the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence Model, and has been a regular assessor for the British Quality Foundation UK Quality Awards.
