  • UK representative on the European Centre for River Restoration Management Board since 2005
  • Advising on a range of small to medium scale river restoration projects, from scoping studies to strategic planning
  • Scientific & Technical Committee member for the 2008 ECRR conference in Venice, session chair and workshop coordinator
  • Lecturing on three masters programmes, supervision of postgraduate academic thesis, guest lecturer at Birmingham University
  • Training workshops on river management and restoration in Scotland.

Background

Martin Janes worked initially for the  Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), where he assisted the  completion of the New Rivers and Wildlife Handbook. At the end of a five year period of drafting Martin went on to became the Project Co-ordinator for an EU-LIFE funded partner project working for the River Restoration Project Ltd (RRP). Martin co-ordinated the UK’s two foremost river restoration demonstration projects, including planning and on-site technical supervision through to budgetary and reporting responsibilities to Brussels. 

In 1998 RRP became the River Restoration Centre Ltd.  Martin took over as Centre Manager, managing this not-for-profit organisation with six staff based at Cranfield University, reporting to a Board of Directors and senior UK Statutory Agency Management Board.  The role involves managing the centre and centre staff, finances and building the business as well as providing technical input on the ground, teaching and advising.
