Current activities
Windo Hutabarat is currently managing the IMRC project “Designing a PSS for Complex Micro-integrated Devices”, a crossover research with the 3-D Mintegration Grand Challenge. The project aims to develop a set of methodologies to facilitate the design of product-service systems (PSS) in which 3-D micro-integrated devices form the physical core of the system. These methodologies would be designed for use by a micro-integrated device design team from the start of the design process, with particular focus on the design of medical PSS with an integrated microfluidic device core.
He is also investigating the application of the Axiomatic Design methodology to enable micro-integrated device designers to work backwards from value/service requirements to an initial design, with an eye towards leveraging on his expertise in topological geometry optimisation.

Background
Windo Hutabarat was trained as an Aerospace Engineer at the Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia. After applying this training in a start-up company working on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Design, he won the opportunity to start his PhD research on Computational Design in the Engineering Design Centre, University of Cambridge through a joint Chevening/Rolls-Royce Scholarship. Having a keen interest in finding better roles for computational methods throughout the design process, his topic was on the application of fluid simulation during the early phases of aerodynamic design. His ideas on aerodynamic topology optimisation gained industrial support from Cambridge Flow Solutions, leading to subsequent financial and technological support from them and the EPSRC (through the Cambridge EDC).
In November 2008 he joined Cranfield University as a research fellow and project manager in the Manufacturing Systems Centre.
