Background

Dr Tim Hess is an agro-hydrologist with a BSc in Geography and an MSc in Land Resource Management. His PhD was on the impact of climatic variability over the period 1961-1990 on the soil water balance of upland soils in the North East Arid Zone of Nigeria.

His research has focused on the measurement and quantification of water balances as applied to wetlands, rainfed- and irrigated agriculture in both temperate and semi-arid environments. This has also been applied to flood risk management and irrigation management. He has a particular interest in evapotranspiration estimation and modelling.

He was an Executive Council member of the UK Irrigation Association for over 10 years and is presently a member of the S.E. Region Committee of the British Hydrological Society.  From 1999 to 2003 he was a member of the British Standards Committee CPI/113/1 on Hydrometry (velocity area methods). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
