Current activities

Research, design and implementation of Environmental Information System application software supporting national level policy-making in Soil Quality and Protection, Pollution Control and Impact Assessment, Water Resource and Catchment Management, Soil and Land Management and Environmental Risk Assessment.

Background

Stephen Hallett has a long-standing expertise in the application of spatial computer-based methodologies and GIS to the environmental sciences with particular reference to soil and natural environmental systems. Acting as Group manager of the Cranfield University National Soil Resources Institute’s Soil Resources Group, he holds the overall responsibility for Cranfield’s national Land Information System (LandIS),containing comprehensive soil and related near-earth environmental information for England and Wales (www.landis.org.uk).

He led the development of a Soil Information System for the Maltese islands (MALSIS) (LIFE 00/TCY/MT/000036), the Turkish GDRS Soil Database project, and was a Work Package leader in the Aquadapt programme (EVK1-CT-2001-00104), and the project manager of the Soil-Net educational project (www.soil-net.com). He also leads the Cranfield World Soil Survey Archive and Catalogue project (Wossac) (www.wossac.com) – an archive holding extensive global datasets relevant to desertification studies. Dr Hallett has extensive experience in project management, Internet development, systems analysis, design and development of spatial environmental information systems, environmental risk and geo-hazard assessment and decision support systems for land, water and toxic chemicals management. He has worked on a wide range of public and private-sector projects both in the UK and internationally. Dr Hallett teaches Systems Analysis, Spatial Data management and Internet mapping at postgraduate level and supervises Doctoral studies.
