Background
Dr Paul Comley works as a Senior Research Engineer in the Precision Engineering Institute within the Manufacturing and Materials Department. His responsibilities include tactile metrology together with machine system and process research within the field of precision engineering, current examples include the establishment of a high precision aspheric generator within the structured surfaces facility, and the metrology of mirror segments for the ESO ELT programme.
Paul qualified and worked as a mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry before gaining a scholarship with NPL to successfully undertake an MSc in Metrology. Going on to gain a PhD for research into grinding technology and the associated effects on surface integrity, he worked for Cranfield Precision Engineering, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of high precision machine tools. Initially with responsibilities for diamond turning activities, then machine tool calibration, process development, and finally grinding R&D for Cranfield Precision and its parent organisation Landis Lund. Whilst engaged within R&D he worked closely on research with a number of universities and industrial organisations, participating in both European and EPSRC collaborative programmes. He has published and presented the research within CIRP, ISAAT, and ENSAM and made the keynote at LEM21 in Japan. Professional qualifications include Fellow of the CQI , CQP and MIET.
