Current activities
Dr Fiona Charnley is the Course Director for the Design and Innovation for Sustainability (MDes)course.
Fiona is an expert in the process of Whole System Design; a cross-disciplinary and integrated approach to the development of more sustainable and innovative products, services and systems. Her research focuses on developing and implementing tools, techniques and methodologies to demonstrate principles of sustainable design practise.
Fiona currently leads the Sustainable Design-led Innovation (SDI) project, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund. This project is a business support programme, which aims to help local SME’s to engage with early stage innovation driven by the sustainability agenda.

Background
Dr Fiona Charnley joined Cranfield University as a course director in 2011 after working as a research fellow at De Montfort University where she worked on an EPSRC funded project to engage school communities in sustainable design principles.
Fiona completed her PhD at Cranfield University in 2008 focusing on the process of whole system design for the development of more innovative and sustainable products, services and systems. She also has an MSc and a BA in Industrial Design.
Fiona has built upon and shared her experience and expertise in design for sustainability by leading several research projects and teaching across multiple masters programmes.
Fiona has expertise across multiple approaches to designing for improved innovation and sustainability. Capturing, understanding and communicating behaviour and methodology used in sustainable design is a particular area of interest and competence.
