Current activities

Dr Debabrata Bhattacharyya is working as a Research Officer in the Sports Surface and Nanotechnology Institute within the Department of Manufacturing and Materials at Cranfield University. He is currently engaged in a Q2M project entitled “Batch integration of high-quality materials to microsystems” funded by the European Commission through FP6 programme. The vision of the project is to develop novel batch microfabrication technologies of components and materials that are unsuitable for monolithic integration. He is engaged in design and implementation of wafer-scale integration of RF MEMS components incorporating piezoelectric materials and adopting transfer bonding technology.

His work encompasses research and development in PZT (lead zirconate titanate) thin film growth and characterisation with particular attention to new process design and development promising novel functionality in a wide range of device applications that has tremendous potential to realise new generation of RF MEMS switches, varactors, filters and resonators for wireless communications, aerospace and automotive electronics. Other areas of his research interest include self-organised quantum dots (QDs), integrated optics and nanophotonics to extend activities in new frontiers of nanomaterials, optical anisotropy and nonlinearity for diverse range of applications, in particular sensors, bio-medical and high-speed communication systems.

Background

Dr Debabrata Bhattacharyya received his BSc (Hons. in Physics) and Master of Technology (MTech) in Radiophysics and Electronics from the University of Calcutta, India. He was awarded ORS scholarship (CVCP) to carry out his PhD research in the UK, receiving his PhD from the University of Glasgow. He established spectral mode grouping in InGaAs/GaAs self-organised quantum dot (QD) lasers and demonstrated selective QD intermixing process enabling photonic integration.

During his engagement in Corning (former BT photonics lab) he worked on lasers, electro-optics and optical fibre for 40Gbit/s WDM transmission. Then he joined Durham University and began new activities in RF microsensors and actuators adopting MEMS technology. He was involved in developing high sensitivity SAW liquid density sensors for industrial applications. He also worked as a scientist in Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute, Government of India where he was engaged in a range of technologies including design and development of microstrip line and antennas, sensors and high temperature superconducting (HTSC) thin film for microwave ICs. He has R&D experience of working with GaAs, InP and Si technology for high-speed device fabrication and characterisation.

He is a member of the IEEE UFFC society and published more than 30 Journal and Conference papers. He received “Best presentation Award”, IEEE & LEOS meeting (Scottish Chapter), a part of IEEE regional scientific programme and activities.
