Current activities

Dr Ahmed Al-Ashaab is currently involved in concurrent engineering (QFD, DFM/DFA, FMEA, NPD/I methodologies), lean product development (lean thinking), knowledge based engineering (knowledge management and modelling, manufacturing process and resources capabilities), and also collaborative product development (knowledge driven web-based collaboration, collaborative environment).

Background

Dr Ahmed Al-Ashaab, MSc PhD, joined Cranfield University in January 2007 as a Lecturer in Decision Engineering. He is Course Director of the  Decision Engineering and Knowledge Management for Innovation programmes. He is an active researcher in the area of collaborative product development, concurrent engineering, knowledge based engineering and lean product development. His research projects have a strong focus on industrial applications. The research carrier started after he obtained his PhD from Loughborough University in 1994.  He then worked at ITESM Campus Monterrey in Mexico from 1994 to 2000 where 50% of his time was spent working with Mexican Industry in applied research. He has been active in introducing and implementing NPI/D methodologies based on concurrent engineering. He joined Wolverhampton University in September 2000 where he was Manufacturing Engineering Pathway Manager. He was involved in several knowledge transfer projects with SME companies in the area of Product Development and manufacturing cost reduction.

Dr Ahmed Al-Ashaab is the author/co-author of around 30 research papers published in major international journals and internationally refereed conferences. He has supervised over 30 Masters and Doctoral theses. He is also serving on the international technical and publicity committees of several international conferences such as International Conference on Agility, VIRTUAL CONCEPT 2005 and ISPE/CE2xxx Series Conferences. He is a member on the Editorial Board of the Agile Manufacturing Journal and a member of several networks of excellence, including the CE-NET, rapid manufacturing platform and affordable engineering. He is a regular peer reviewer for EPSRC and other International journal and conferences.
